Dr. George Petrie (1866–1947)
Scholar, Educator, and Institutional Builder
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. George Petrie was a pioneering academic leader
whose visionary approach to education, research, and character development
fundamentally shaped higher education in the state. After earning his undergraduate
and master's degrees at the University of Virginia, Petrie attended Johns Hopkins
University, where he became the first native Alabamian to earn a Ph.D.
In 1887, Dr. Petrie joined the faculty of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of
Alabama (now Auburn University), holding the school’s first non-scientific professorship
as a professor of history and Latin. Over a distinguished career spanning more than
50 years, his dedication to academic excellence and institutional innovation
transformed the university:
-
Innovative Teaching & Research: Dr. Petrie revolutionized instruction in Alabama by introducing modern seminar-style teaching and original primary-source research. He established the university’s History Department and mentored generations of scholars who went on to lead Southern historical studies.
-
Graduate Education Pioneer: Recognizing the critical need for advanced discovery and rigorous inquiry, Dr. Petrie founded and served as the long-time Dean of the Graduate School, building the foundation for graduate-level research in Alabama.
-
Athletics & Character: A holistic educator, Dr. Petrie recognized intercollegiate athletics not as a distraction from academics, but as a vital laboratory for cultivating personal character, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
-
Enduring Principles: In 1943, near the conclusion of his remarkable career, he authored the renowned Auburn Creed, a timeless statement honoring hard work, integrity, human sympathy, and honest education.
